When I first opened Dockwood Music I didn't want the feel of an institution. I didn't want it located in an environment that wasn't casual and relaxed. I relocated to a bigger place but I was able to maintain the warm environment as before. People often ask "what my approach to teaching is" and it's very simple. I get the students use to their instruments and immediately attemptting to play songs they know and enjoy. While learning songs the student can hear results immediately and during that process they learn music theory on their instrument of choice. I know I would not be playing today if I had to play scales all day. I won't do that! Will the student learn scales and theory? Absolutely! But I have felt my approach to enjoy the art of the instrument and make it fun has proven over and over to be the most effective for my students. I teach all genres.
